These membranes are permeable to either positively or negatively charged ions in the aqueous solution used in the Chlor-alkali industry. The membranes that are selectively permeable to positively charged ions are usually named cation-exchange membranes (CEM), and membranes selectively permeable to negatively charged ions are called anion membranes (AEM). The selectivity occurs due to the high concentration of immobile (fixed) ions within the membrane body.
